The Lord returns home to his estate after a stay abroad. The strongman and exuberant person he was has been peeled out of him. He has good manners but is devoid of manliness and human courage.

Hilleborg always speaks negatively about her king's marriage to his left hand, Countess Danner. Nevertheless, the encounter with Copenhagen and its many temptations turns out to be fateful for the charming Eigil and the otherwise faithful Arne.
