Nadezhda Kazakova, a Siberian girl, comes to a seaside southern town for a youth song festival. But at the first rehearsal with the orchestra Nadya fails, after which she leaves for the construction of a hydroelectric power plant. There, in a working club, success, inspiration, hope and unrequited love come to her.

Moscow, XIX century. A small official Misha Balzaminov lives in a small house. He, like his mother, sees his happiness in marrying a rich bride. Misha images in dreams and fantasies that he is a general or even a king — rich and domineering. In reality, poor Balzaminov is haunted by setbacks.

In the house of Daria Mikhailovna Lasunskaya, a noble and wealthy landowner, former beauty and lioness of the capital, who even far from civilization still organizes her salon, a certain Baron, erudite and expert in philosophy, who promised to introduce his scientific research, is waiting. Instead of the expected celebrity arrives Dmitri Nikolaevich Rudin, whom the Baron instructed to deliver his article. Rudin charms everyone with his erudition, originality and logical thinking. Lasunskaya is determined to make the ornament of his salon. During the two months that Rudin spends at Lasunskaya's, he becomes indispensable to her. But Rudin's misfortune is that while he inflames others, he himself remains as cold as ice, never thinking that his words "may confuse and destroy a young heart".

Some of them have understood that they can't live outside Russia and go back maybe to be happy, maybe not, some go back to face sure death for their crimes, some don't go back and know that are going to miss homeland forever, some are comfortably well off (are they?) in exile.

An important event is taking place in a small provincial town, an elderly rich prince arrives. The local "lioness" Maria Alexandrovna Moskaleva decides to marry him to her daughter Zinochka. But the "noble" Mordassov society is by no means inclined to voluntarily give up its positions: after all, in the head of every mother who has a marriageable daughter, the dream is to get a rich man as a son-in-law.

In 1920, just 3 years after the October revolution, the peoples had to decide between conforming to Bolshevism or national self-determination. In that torn-apart-time, one man, the comedian Volodya, tries to mediate, not between different ideologies, but social life and art. While others just want to wash away their gloom, he reflects on the everyday sorrows and the role of art in that time of changes.

Thirty years after war's end a man in Kazakhstan contacts an old Russian woman to say he is her long-lost son.
