In Fiolgade in Helsingør, in a cozy, old farm, commercial gardener Johansen, who became a widower early, lives with his only child, his daughter Mette, who is her father's everything, just as her young friends and acquaintances consider "gardener father" a fatherly friend. In a large shoe store, Erik Hansen is the salesman for a sweet and smart young girl, Edith Bjørnfeldt, with whom he falls head over heels in love. He persuades her to go out with him in the evening. At a dance restaurant, they accidentally meet Edith's brother Willy Bjørnfeldt, a Copenhagener and one of the smart go-out types of the time. When Edith and her brother are alone at the table for a moment, Willy advises her to seize the opportunity and marry Erik, and thus say goodbye to the shoe business, which is hanging over her by the throat.

Søndreø is a small, peaceful island in one of Denmark's fjords, owned and run by the old farmer Lars Søndervold and his son Søren. But times are hard, and everything is not going as it should. The usurer Sintram lives and breathes for money and, for this very reason; he disinherits his charitable son Floridan. Embittered, Sintram buries his fortune in the forest and hides a will in a beech tree, with his estate left to anyone who finds it. This act is the only hard physical work the old usurer has done in his life and, ironically, the exhaustion kills him. Meanwhile, Floridan has been employed at a sawmill when he receives the news of his father’s death and his own disinheritance. The 74-year-old widow, Juliane Cramer, is a very wealthy lady with an incredible appetite for life. Despite her advanced age, she rushes from one pleasure to another, from mannequin shows to boxing matches, and when her lawyer reminds her that it is time for her to write her will, she firmly rejects him. There is no urgency: "I have decided that I want to live for many more years, that's it". She is more than generous towards her nephews and nieces and their spouses. They all live in a property that belongs to her. That is why they have never paid a penny in rent. They know that, if things get tough, they can always 'borrow' a couple of hundred kroner or three from Aunt Cramer. So everything is very good - apparently...

Landowner Munk has problems – he cherishes his wild moorland and does not want to parcel it out. His friend Martin Hald tries to mediate, but in vain. At the same time, Munk is worried about his nephew Jørgen, who grew up with him. He is in prison – convicted on false grounds. In prison, he has a friend named "Fusser," and when they are released, Fusser decides to investigate Jørgen's case.

The year is 1946. Dr. Bertil Burman works at a Red Cross Hospital in Vienna. One day, a barely teenage girl, Leni Rosner, collapses at his reception.

It turns out that Leni’s presence brings peace and tranquility to the otherwise tense family dynamics, and she even finds time to play matchmaker for Jørgen Wedel and the Lassen’s 18-year-old daughter, Edith.

Peter Soeborg and Susanne have been happily married for a month. He is a postman, but very gifted voice and in a couple of years participated as korherre Alhambra Theatre's operettas. Peter and especially his cute little wife proud dreams for the future, and their mutual friend, the old dresser Kragelund, who lives in the same house, also believe in Peter's abilities. There has to be premiered at the operetta "Love", and Peter hopes to be considered. But it should prove to be quite easy.

After World War II, Europe lies in ruins and help is desperately needed everywhere. One person trying to make a difference is Dr. Jørgen Vedel, who travels with the Red Cross to Vienna to vaccinate children. There he meets Leni, a girl who has been to Auschwitz, where she lost her mother. Jørgen arranges for Leni to come to Denmark, where she can start a whole new life.

When a man becomes tyrannical towards his family, the women of the house decide to teach him a lesson in gratitude.
