Mathilde Kratzer owns the entertainment venue "Bei Mathilde" (At Mathilde's). Her roommate Max also has a financial stake in the establishment, but only as a silent partner, which is why he works either as Mathilde's servant or as the bouncer. He would love to rename the venue "Bei Max und Mathilde" (At Max and Mathilde's), but Mathilde would rather return his investment. Because she can't afford to do so, Max is in financial trouble and is being relentlessly pursued by the tax authorities.

Ferdinand Strödl is the regular coachman for the distinguished Max Jolander, who is constantly on the lookout for romantic adventures. Jolander regularly has Strödl drive him to his rendezvous, during which the coachman witnesses the suffering of many a jilted girl. At such times, Strödl acts as a fatherly friend to Jolander when the consequences of his escapades take on tragic proportions.

Later, Annie is tasked by her father with delivering new locks to a countess's castle. At the train station, she is mistaken for the countess's niece, whose arrival is imminent. She is taken to the castle in a magnificent carriage and encounters Georg again, who is out for an unauthorized joyride in a stylish car. Each now believes the other to be extremely wealthy. When the real countess arrives at the castle, she enjoys playing along with the charade and poses as her own companion, with whom Count Egon falls in love. After the confusion is resolved, there are two happy couples.

Gretl has been living in Vienna ever since her father, Klaghofer, a small general store owner, tried to marry her off against her will to the wealthy Gruber farmer. Her disgruntled father never opened a single one of her letters. A postcard tells him that Gretl has married—and, he mistakenly assumes, to a rich man. Klaghofer sets out to celebrate the reconciliation. But as soon as he leaves his provincial Austrian hometown and arrives in Vienna, Klaghofer causes utter chaos. In the process, he repairs a troubled marriage and is delighted at the happy ending for everyone involved.

The film is an adaptation of the 1891 operetta Der Vogelhändler by composer Carl Zeller, with libretto by Moritz West and Ludwig Held, though it incorporates few of the original songs, using them mostly instrumentally or in the background. The plot follows Adam, a Tyrolean bird seller in 18th-century Rhineland, who hopes to marry his beloved Christl, a postmaster's daughter; to secure his future, she arranges for him to perform at court, but complications arise when she is mistakenly suspected of an affair with a philandering prince.
