A young man and his friend move to Taiwan, believing it to be a land of possibilities, but it's not long before they're accused of being spies.

Pairs of best college friends, Shen Jung (Brigitte Lin) and Li Lun-mei (Chelsia Chan); Chen Cheng-hsiung (Chin Han) and Fang Juei (Alan Tam) meet at the tennis courts. Fang Juei likes the ebullient Li Lun-mei, but after hearing the contemplative Cheng-hsiung at a school concert, is smitten by his talents and looks. However, as fate would have it, Cheng-hsiung is after the studious and gentler Shen Jung.

His son doesn't like any car he chooses. His wife, a typical Taiwanese woman who lives frugally, shaves any penny she can. She is the one who pays for the family's new car. They go out on trips happily, and become the envy of the neighborhood. Zhang thus gets the new car he's always dreamed of, but he starts to worry about it getting dirty, because it's simply too new, too nice for him. The car thus becomes his son's vehicle. He rides the old bike to work again, just like he has during all these years.

In 1949, the Communists take over mainland. The refugees and the military arrive in the Keelung Harbor in Taiwan. A father holds secret meetings with other generals in attempt to recover the lost land, his kids still play games with their grandma who enjoys the harmony in hardship.

Adding another complication is the fact that Ma Tung wants to kill White Dragon in revenge for the humiliation Tung's father suffered in a duel against White Dragon years earlier.
