Lorenzo is a young man returns to Spain after spending some time in England, where he fell in love with Berta, the daughter of Spanish immigrants. Lorenzo writes several letters to her trying to convey the beauty of the world her parents left behind.

A particular reading of the hard years of famine, repression and censorship after the massacre of the Spanish Civil War (1936-39), through popular culture: songs, newspapers and magazines, movies and newsreels.

Fifteen years after the plot a lawyer and a military ex-attorney meet and recall the intense days of 1975 when both participated in the decission of war or peace. The film is told in flashbacks of the two protagonists.

This literary film is imbued with the disenchantment of Spanish exiles who left their homes to protest Franco's fascist regime and then returned after its demise to find that democracy had not instilled either ethics or deep motivation in government leaders. Director Basilio Martin Patino presents his story, and a large part of the film is based on his own life, through the experiences of an exiled heroine played by Charo Lopez. She has returned to Spain to look for meaning in her life, something that she never found living in Germany, not even after having a child. She is also in the process of translating the German lyric poet Friederich Holderlin (see the 1985 Halfte Des Lebens) into Spanish, focusing on his epic Hyperion. Excerpts from the translation are voiced over throughout the film. As she looks up old friends from many, many years ago, even those who have achieved worldly success are suffering from the same ennui that propelled her back home.

In 1931, a young soldier deserts from the army and falls into a country farm, where he is welcomed by the owner due to his political ideas. Manolo has four daughters, Fernando likes all of them and they like him, so he has to decide which one to love.

Ana is a middle aged woman who many years ago decided to start a new life in Paris. Now she must return to her hometown after the death of her parents, since they have left her an inheritance. There she meets Laura, her only sister, with whom she has to share the money received and, especially, an old house located in the center of Guadalajara. Manoli and Fernando, a couple of communist ideas, want to live their love freely, fleeing from any bourgeois convention. At first, the couple rejects the help of her parents, but soon they will begin to give in and accept all kinds of comforts.

A film team arrives at a more authentic and old square in Madrid to shoot a film. The area is full of children, working families and simple people who see the cinema as something unattainable. From his balcony, Paloma, does not lose detail of the shooting, nor of the movements of the gallant, for which he feels a strong attraction.

An air-hostess is pregnant but she does not know the name of the father, a foreigner. When the baby is born, she gives it to her sister that has already two children. The child grows up as another member of the family. Although the adults keep the secret, the children know that he is different.

Chusa shares a flat in central Madrid with her cousin Jaime and her lover Alberto. The group makes ends meet by smuggling and selling drugs from Morocco. They take in a naive young woman, Elena, and decide to include her in their next scheme although this will prove complicated.

In the early Spanish Civil Post-war, in Madrid, during the most hard times of the Franco dictatorship, a group of second-rate players try to get out of their wretched lives taking advantage of the artistic caprices of the son of a rich man who supports the regime. They try to stage a Pre-war 'zarzuela' (a sort of Spanish operetta), 'La Corte Del Faraón', which ironically, thirty years later, is too obscene for the regime censorship. They finally manage to perform the 'zarzuela' but end up in the police station where they confirm that justice depends on which side are you on

Tatin is a young man of fifteen years old who joins a violent group of extreme right-wing ideology, led by Blanca, a mature woman of influential personality.

Vicente and Margarita are a traditional and middle class married couple whose life is surrounded by a sea of confusion and uncertainty when their children begin to make their own decisions. They have discovered love and will not let their parents tell them what to do or who they have to love. The principles and traditions of the family will be replaced by each of the young people who will represent the different social problems of the time. Thus, the coexistence between them will change without Vicente and Marga can do anything to avoid it.
