Shades of Gray

Ann Annington (Minter) writes book reviews for a newspaper and when a reporter fails his assignment to get an interview with the noted author Harold Hargrave (Glass), she undertakes to meet the young man. She rents the room next door to his work shop and by impersonating a maid soon wins his good graces.

His wife stows away on his ship when he leaves, hoping to see her son, who is aboard. She takes along with her Mary, the daughter of a woman the captain once loved. Complications ensue.

One night at a ball, Gordon spies Jenks following him and, in the course of his escape, accepts refuge from a fight promoter named Brooks. At Brooks' request, Gordon substitutes for Sylvester's opponent, burglar Deacon, at a charity bout, and knocks out the real pugilist. Later, during a dinner party at the Tidmarshes', Gordon is mistaken for a lord and, when the real nobleman appears, is denounced as an impostor. A lost film.

When an out-of-work Chicagoan travels west as a hobo on a freight train, he finds himself falsely accused of murder.

Dan Williams leaves his small hometown in disgrace, and travels to New York City to try his luck on Broadway. He gets a small part in a Broadway show, but his press agent releases a story that he has a big part and is making $3,000 a week. Dan's father, a banker who is facing a run on his bank, hears about Dan's sudden "fortune" and asks him for financial help. Complications ensue.

This 1929 drama about mistaken identities contains three eight minute scenes that involve talking. The rest of the film is silent and subtitled. The trouble begins when the hero follows a pretty lady aboard an ocean liner. He boards the ship using the name of his friend who was supposed to take the cruise for health reasons. The friend was told that if he did not board the boat, he would not receive his inheritance. Unfortunately for the hero, a male nurse believes that he is the sick friend and forces him to stay in the cabin and subsist upon a diet of goat's milk.

A newspaper publisher's daughter is arrested for speeding. In order to avoid embarrassing her father, since his newspaper is in the midst of an anti-speeding campaign, she uses an assumed name. She is paroled into the custody of an assistant district attorney, who doesn't know who she really is.

A rich Easterner who has always wanted to live in "the Wild West" plans to move to a Western town. Unknown to him, the town's "wild" days are long gone and it is an orderly and civilized place now. The townsmen, not wanting to lose a rich potential resident, contrive to make over the town to suit the young man's fantasy.
