King Frederick II and his leading advisors hesitate too long in the eyes of some officers, so Major von Schill decides to strike out on his own. He hoped that his brave move would be the catalyst for the great war of liberation. But von Schill's troops were soon defeated by a superior force of Dutch-Danish troops. The king takes a public stand against von Schill's actions and eleven of his officers are shot by summary execution on Napoleon's orders. However, one of them, Lieutenant Heinrich von Wedell, escapes death and is sentenced to forced labor for life. When Wedell's brother Karl, who opposed von Schill's unauthorized actions, learns of Heinrich's fate, he decides to help him in a risky way...

Martin Hinterkirchner, dissatisfied with his position, sends the hits he has secretly composed to a manager. One of them would be ideal for the famous singer Linda Borg, but her manager refuses. Unfortunately, Martin now blames Linda and has nothing good to say about her - in contrast to his grandfather Leopold, who met Linda at a dog show. When Martin stands in for his untalented friend Peter as a singer at a hit song competition and mistakenly believes he has failed, he returns to his Tyrolean home village of Himmelberg. Peter, on the other hand, accepts a contract even though he cannot sing the required duet with Linda Borg and looks for excuses. Linda travels to Tyrol in a bad mood because she has received love letters from there. She has no idea that Martin's grandfather Leopold is the secret sender who wants to get her to sing Martin's hits.

Willi Winzig is a small tax officer with a big heart. He sometimes lets the tax files of his insolvent fellow citizens disappear into the air shaft. But shortly before his retirement, the shaft is so full that Willi has to dispose of the file of a penniless taxpayer in the wastepaper basket. Leopold, head waiter at the "Weißen Rössl" (White Horse Inn), is secretly in love with the owner of the restaurant, Josepha. But she's only interested in the lawyer Dr. Siedler. Jealous, Leopold comes up with a plan to gain Josepha's attention.

A pop singer who has been successful on Broadway, is homesick and returns.

Carlo del Ponte, a pop star celebrated in the U.S., travels to his hometown of Santa Clara, Italy, to take some time off. Not only does Carlo find himself caught up in an armed robbery there, but his pretty cousin Antonella is missing her father and believes he has fallen victim to the old family feud between the del Pontes and the Tartinis. Now Carlo is supposed to help resolve the matter as peacefully as possible.

Retired tax official Willi Winzig spends his retirement happily and contentedly in his home. However, this changes when his sister Heidelinde, her daughter and his father want to move in with him, and as Willi is a good-natured man, he takes them in, but because they have no money and his pension is not enough for all four of them, he has to take on a new job. He gets a job as a salesman for household appliances, but his good nature gets in the way again.

Pepe Nietnagel and his fellow students of the Mommsen school come up with all kinds of ideas to get out of doing any actual school work. This includes simulating suicides, setting off the air-raid sirens and abusing the school director's new broadcasting system. They succeed in sending their teacher to a sanatorium and get a replacement that turns out to not be so bad after all.

Kummerow, a village in North East Germany, around 1900: Mean-spirited miller Düker wants to drive cowherd Krischan out of the village. Being popular with the local children, Krischan can rely on the help of schoolboys Martin and Johannes and their friends, who try to prevent the miller's plans by playing pranks on him.

Dr. Oskar Sommer, a good-natured high school teacher, takes on a momentous task for the school janitor, also named Oskar Sommer: he is to play the role of the janitor's daughter's father for a few days. Since the real father has not been seen for 15 years and has pretended to be a teacher in his letters, the two Sommers promptly pick up the wrong person at the train station.
