The Vagabond King

Composer Joseph Lanner is jealous when the first violinist in his orchestra, none other than Johann Strauss, wants to form his own orchestra also in Vienna and write his own compositions.

The clerk of Nuremberg wants to use his position to marry the young Evchen, but she does not love him and to avoid this marriage she asks the village shoemaker to ask for her hand in marriage. But everything becomes complicated when a nobleman of noble birth appears who has fled from his family castle.

The quarrel between the waltz king Joseph Lanner and his still unknown violinist Johann Strauss. It comes to a break. Strauss is engaged in London and has his first successes there. Thanks to the initially unfortunate intervention of Lanner's daughter, a reconciliation is finally achieved.

London at the time of the War of the Spanish Succession. Queen Anne's followers are divided into two factions: one side, led by Lord Bolingbroke, is pushing for peace talks and a quick reconciliation with France; the other side, led by the influential Duchess of Marlborough, is in favor of continuing the war. During a ball, she snubs her future stepmother and even has the audacity to ask the orchestra to play a waltz—a dance considered deeply improper at the time.
