In the Škoda factory, where they are feverishly rearming in 1914, works the foreman Kalina, the father of the young men Pavel and Jan. Pavel is a supporter of the monarchy, while Jan, on the contrary, defends the idea of ​​our national independence. Just before mobilization, Jan escapes to Russia, where he joins a group of volunteer legionnaires called the "Czech Company", fighting against the Austro-Hungarian monarchy. Pavel enlists in the Austrian army. The brothers do not meet again until July 1917 in the battle of Zborov in Ukraine, which marked a successful breakthrough of the Austro-Hungarian front.

Young civil servant Marta Urbanová wins a two-week stay at a luxury hotel. While looking for a typing room, she accidentally finds herself in the suite of the Minister of Finance, who mistakes her for a typist. Marta complies with the request of the Minister's secretary Diviš and stays to take dictation...

People are afraid of the usurer Chazaj and are convinced that he is the bearer of evil. One day Chazaj pays a visit to the poor artist Simon Jordán and asks him to paint his portrait. Simon agrees but as he progresses with the work his mind conjures up terrible thoughts and in the end he commits suicide. The portrait looks lifelike and Chazaj is content with the results. After Chazaj's death the picture changes hands and brings misfortune to all who own it. The last victim is the young painter Roman who buys Chazaj's portrait in a bazaar. He finds a treasure in the frame and begins to live well off it. The comfortable life suits him so well that he rejects his original artistic aims and becomes a painter of fashionable kitsch.

Young engineer Petr Pavelec works on a dam plan on the Loučnica River. He meets Irena, the daughter of an unscrupulous construction entrepreneur Berka, and falls in love with her. When Petr's project wins the tender, Berka and Irena take him on as a partner, and the company is awarded the contract to build the dam. Petr, in love, does not see how sloppy the construction is being carried out. He only sees it when a worker is killed on the construction site...

The foolish Pedro is supposed to marry the beautiful Rosita, who is also attracted to the adventurer Pancho - during his journey to see her, Pancho finds himself in prison, where he is tricked by a cunning desperado who decides to win Rosita for himself.

It all started when the family of a rich farmer, Stanek, moved to a small village and his daughter Liduška fell in love with a poor violinist, Toník. However, her parents did not approve of her love and decided to marry her to the son of the landowner Krejzová, even though the girl rejected the unsympathetic man. When her parents did not back down, Liduška was determined to run away with Toník, but when she learned that her beloved had been called up for military service, in despair she gave in to her parents' pressure and agreed to the wedding...

And since Mr. Kaliba has no son, it is certain that his only daughter Liduška must marry a miller. Perhaps this would have happened if the Kalibas had not gone to the anniversary exhibition. Here, Liduška meets the handsome engineer Karel Loukota, who is an overly zealous member of the cycling club "Don't Get Married!", but is not immune to love at all. Of course, he will face many hardships and obstacles, the biggest of which is, of course, the miller Kaliba with his fierce efforts to uphold the family tradition...
