Kind and decent professor Artur Čejka is about to marry his fiancée Helena Frýdlová. On the eve of the wedding, he comes across the unfortunate actress Káťa Holanová on the riverbank, who has been unsuccessfully looking for an engagement for a long time and wants to take her own life out of desperation. Čejka prevents her from committing suicide and helps her. He meets the girl again on the train when he and Helena are going on their honeymoon...

The Kráčmer couple work diligently in the vegetable garden. They are saving for a dowry for their only daughter, Betynce, who is in a serious relationship with the doctor Zdeborský. Young doctor Hájek has been looking for a job for a long time in vain. But luck has smiled on him a little - he has won a competition for the best advertising slogan, which was held by the factory owner Bárta. The prize is a stay in a luxurious mountain hotel. At the same time, Bárta is also leaving for the same winter resort, but on a whim he decides to use a false name and pretend to be a poor man. It is therefore not surprising that the hotel staff gets confused when accommodating the two guests. The poor young man receives all sorts of honors and favors, the factory owner huddles in a small room without heating. In addition, Bárta's cute daughter appears on the scene, and all sorts of complications are not long in coming.

He had been eyeing the charming neighbor, poor Kateřina, for a long time, but his innate shyness did not allow him to do more. And now, as soon as his brain has recovered from the attack of an unprecedented amount of alcohol, his neighbor's enterprising roommate informs him that he had disgraced Kateřina while drunk, in order to help his friend, who also loves the nice and well-off doctor, in a somewhat peculiar way.

She unexpectedly receives a letter from America from a certain Jonn Sam, who informs her that he is coming to Europe, where he intends to settle down.
