Two Communist agents plot an attack on a dam in Spain.

In 1922, Infantry Captain Fernando Salas, arriving from Madrid, joins, without much enthusiasm, a battalion ruled by Commander Almendro, a tough veteran of the African war who soon notices a clear lack of military vocation in the new recruit.

In 1925 Maria Velez, a young Andalusian, starts working on the set of a variety show. Her tenacity, her fighting spirit and the strength of his voice enable Mary to win fame as a great popular singer. But his luck her love life is not the same, three men fall for her and whoever is elected dies tragically.
