There is a civil war in Central Asia. Bai-rapist kills the whole family of a Turkmen young man, the shepherd Chara Esenov. The surviving Chara, avenging the scolded honor of her young sister, single-handedly pursues Shamurad Khan, the head of the local Basmachi gang. Valeriy Kropotov is CEO of a big industrial company in Leningrad who is crafty and successful in getting a major order from the Soviet Government: building an automated assembly line. But his style of management clashes with his subordinates, talented engineers. Their potential is strangled by Kropotov's manipulative control. The government order is not accomplished and Kropotov gets fired. He is rethinking his outdated business style while on the train No.1 to Moscow.

In the fall of 1945, former front-line soldier Umar Badalov makes his way into a deserted village. He honestly fulfilled his military duty, now he has been commissioned and here he is in his village. Autumn dying nature and a devastated village, painted with tragedy, in which he did not meet a soul, except for one dead dog.

Grekov, the chief engineer of the instrument—making plant, is looking for a way out of the difficult situation at the plant: suppliers fail - they have to resort to assault, technology is disrupted, and quality suffers. The Institute of Production Management Problems, to which Grekov is seeking help, suggests introducing a new, as yet untested automated control system at the plant. Grekov agrees, although his colleagues, as one, believe that he chose the wrong time for this.
