Treasure from Heaven

A village in Upper Austria. The sudden death of his mother drives ten-year old Wastl into isolation. His only friend is Franziska, a 16-year-old girl from a conservative, sober-minded family background who dreams of a dancing career. A very exceptional, subtile love story develops against all odds.

The main characters of the story are Pauli, a teacher's son, and Sepp, the son of a sawmill owner. They get to know each other while serving as altar boys, become friends and decide to form their own gang with themselves as leaders. Their first major objective will be a battle against a notorious gang from the neighboring village . . .

In this well-photographed and sometimes confusing wartime drama, an Austrian village experiences the tragedy of war on several different levels. Within one family, the younger son is jealous of the praise his father gives to a Polish POW who is working for them under very difficult conditions. Within the village as a whole, the French, Polish, and Russian POWs are kept under guard by Nazi soldiers, creating a tense situation all around. But more importantly, the village has conspired to hide an Austrian deserter in a cave up in the mountains. This act of rebellion on the part of the deserter and the village hangs in a precarious balance that could be upset by a single traitorous comment to the Gestapo.

This melodrama about love in the third age focuses on the 65-year-old Mathilde living alone after the death of her husband. When she gets to know the attractive Carlo in the opera, she sleeps with him at the same evening. Mathilde tries to call him up some days later, but learns he gave her a wrong number. Despite this disappointing experience, she gets to know the sympathetic Hannes. They become a couple, but after a while, Mathilde meets Carlo, who apologizes and admits being married to a dead sick woman, again...

Set in the midst of World War II and interspersed with beautiful choir music, the horrors of the war unfold when the Germans realized one of the boys in the choir is a Jew and they must find him immediately.
