The Lucky Woman

A mainland Chinese filmmaker, exiled to Hong Kong for her politically-charged work, reunites with her mother on a trip to Taiwan.

Four Indonesian female caregivers, each from a different generation, share their lives in Taiwan. On their days off, they gather at Taipei Main Station, reclaiming their freedom while facing the struggles of migrant women. This film unveils their stories, highlighting resilience, identity, and empowerment.

Before the family home in Shalun, Taoyuan, was demolished under the Taoyuan Aerotropolis redevelopment project, the director's mother passed away unexpectedly. Yet in her absence, the family's long-fragile order seemed to stabilize, even appearing strangely "happy." This subtle and difficult truth compels the director to repeatedly return to the old house on the verge of disappearance, insisting on bringing back her father and brothers, who are trying to move on. As the boundaries between filming and being filmed blur, differing attitudes toward farewell gradually emerge, and long-suppressed memories begin to seep through. The director is left asking herself: Is this an attempt to preserve memory, or a way of trapping herself in a cycle of loss from which she cannot find closure.​​​

HUNG Chun-hsiu spent seven years filming three residents of Kinmen island: an owner of a local photography shop, a retired officer and a Chinese woman from Sichuan province who came to Kinmen with the hope for a better future. Using photographs and archival materials, HUNG explores the personal stories of three residents and how they reflect upon the upheavals between the two sides of the Taiwan Strait.

Director TSENG occasionally began to record the daily life of her mother, out of the need of completing her documentary assignment at school. The films presents a mother's persistence when facing difficulties and her love for her children. In the meantime, interactions and conversations between mother and daughter are revealed spontaneously.
