César has been a watchman in a chemical factory for more than twenty years. One afternoon he receives a letter from his sister telling him that she has sold the family land in the mountains. César decides to abandon his job and undertakes a trip to that area, with the aim of recovering the urn with Elena's ashes buried there. Walking he faces the mourning veiled for years. The territory of his childhood is no longer the same, the forest fires, the advance of private property have changed everything. But the encounters along the way open him to a world that he had refused to face after living trapped in his job.

High school students find their way in life at Las Delicias agrotechnical boarding school in the Argentine countryside. This striking coming-of-age film takes place against an inviting backdrop of fields of crops, greenhouses full of tomato plants, and the somewhat dilapidated school buildings, where dogs and chickens roam.

The story is set at the beginning of the 20th century in Sicily. Salvatore, a very poor farmer, and a widower, decides to emigrate to the US with all his family, including his old mother. Before they embark, they meet Lucy. She is supposed to be a British lady and wants to come back to the States. Lucy, or Luce as Salvatore calls her, for unknown reasons wants to marry someone before to arrive to Ellis Island in New York. Salvatore accepts the proposal. Once they arrive in Ellis Island they spend the quarantine period trying to pass the examinations to be admitted to the States. Tests are not so simple for poor farmers coming from Sicily. Their destiny is in the hands of the custom officers.
