Love and Money

Lugosi works in the locomotive factory, earning little. He does not feel at ease in the world. One reason for his discontent is that his wife - a tractor factory worker - earns more than he does, and another is that she has even had her innovation accepted, while his has not. And because trouble doesn't come alone, poor Lugosi gets involved in a sabotage case.

During a mining accident, the police arrest the sole survivor on suspicion of murder, whose pickaxe is stained with the blood of one of the victims. The investigation reveals that the identity card found on the victim belongs to another person, that the collapse was deliberate and that the miner believed to be the victim has escaped.

The title character in Maria Nover (Sister Maria) is played by Eva Szorenyi. A convent-bred lass on the verge of taking her final vows, Maria falls in love with a handsome artist, portrayed by popular operatic baritone Sandor Sved. Due to a silly misunderstanding, she walks out on Sved and marries his best friend Paul Javor. The frustrated suitor quits the art world to become a world-famous concert singer. Years later, he returns to reclaim Maria, only to find that she's not only still a wife, but also a mother and a dedicated nurse. Gracefully bowing out of her life, the Pagliacci-like Sved continues his singing career to assuage his broken heart.

András Beke, a tractor driver, enlists as a conscript, but he does not want to accept the army's rules and regulations, he wants to show that he is an individual here too. During the marching drill, he goes on an exploratory expedition, drinks from the forbidden water and commits other offences. But the educational punishments make him realise that in the army, instead of being a hero, you have to learn, work hard, stand up for yourself and show solidarity. His re-education is aided by his commanders and peers, but love also plays an important role...

In World War I, two men who look almost identical fight in the same battalion at the front. One of them, Peter Benedek, a landowner, is killed, while István Pongrácz, a mechanical engineer, is hit while wearing Benedek's coat. The severe head injury causes temporary amnesia, and Pongrácz is mistakenly sent to the Benedek estate. Mrs. Benedek is pleased to see that her card-playing husband has become a solid, hard-working man after his wound. But Pongrácz begins to remember...

Advertising was already booming in 1933. Rohr, a Berlin soapmaker, was looking for a particularly attractive face to promote his new product. And he finds it in a shot by photojournalist Schmidt, but the problem is that Mr Schmidt has no idea where, when or who he took the photo of. Two inspiration sources appear clearly: contemporary American gangster movies and Alfred Döblin’s novel Berlin Alexanderplatz (1929).

When a prostitute is murdered in a cheap Berlin boarding house, an investigating judge suspects that the killer is her boyfriend, unaware that his own son and daughter are also mixed up in the case.

On New Year's Eve in 1956 the artist couple, the actor János and the dancer Viki are hastily packing. While they are waiting for the car, which is to take them across the border, their entire life is replayed in front of their eyes.
