A Few Deaths

A film that chronicles the lives of Tatiane, who leaves São Paulo trying to rebuild her life; Odair, a young man exploring his sexuality after leaving his parental home; and Henry, a Haitian immigrant struggling to survive amid Brazil’s poverty. As chaos unfolds in Rondônia, their paths will cross.

In Sao Paulo, Janaína and João take care of each other. She has epilepsy. He is in a relationship with a man who prefers to keep his distance. Above their lives floats the vague trauma of a mudslide that may have buried men and machines alike. Together, they try to protect their bodies from the evil that seems to spread like a fever.

Police reporter Luarlindo Ernesto is the only eyewitness to the creation of the death squad, the first Brazilian extermination group. 60 years later, young journalist Yasmin Santos researches the origins of the militia in Rio de Janeiro and, upon discovering that Luarlindo is alive, decides to track him down to try and convince him to tell her everything he saw.

The first mountains that the Amsterdam-based Colombian artist and filmmaker Ana Bravo Pérez saw in the Netherlands were black. In this experimental work, she follows the stench of the coal in the port of Amsterdam back to its origin: an open wound in northern Colombia. The mine is located in the territory of the Wayuu and has a huge impact on the indigenous people.

Agnes’ life revolves around playing badminton with her queer friends and working at a restaurant she set up inside her house with her best friend Rini. One day her younger brother Indra arrives, looking for his brother Hans. Agnes faces a dilemma, keep the lie or tell the truth about who she is. The truth could give her a chance to reconcile with her brother but it seems more difficult to reach than she thought.

Among ruptures of memories, geographical and affective displacements, we revisited with Bruno the incursion into a city full of noise but that still emits a minimal murmur of love.

Hans is addressing his first love, Arief, as if he could hear him despite the distance and time. This heart-breaking love letter guides his steps in search of Arief, while Agnès, Hans’ feminine double, reappears like a ghost. The Hans/Agnès duo roam the streets of Lisbon in a phantasmagorical and desperate quest, to remind us that it is impossible to escape one’s past.
