In the early 1900s, Nikhilesh, a wealthy Westernized Hindu in colonial East Bengal, feels compelled to test the love of his wife, Bimala. He introduces her to his friend Sandip, a politician agitating against British rule, and Bimala is equally taken with both Sandip's anti-colonial fervor and the man himself. Personal and political tensions subsequently flare as the now assertive Bimala has to make a crucial decision.

A tribute to auteur Mrinal Sen, the film intricately weaves the personal and professional journeys of Kunal Sen and Ranjan through their collaboration on an ambitious film project, Chaalchitra, in 1981.

Burning with a desire to be a journalist, a young man gets his chance when a publisher -- the father of a friend -- suggests that he write a story on the daily life of the people in his house (several families worth of people). The material turns out to be too incohesive and abundant to work into a pointed, thematic article, and just when he is about to give up, his younger brother asks him a simple question: "How many coal burners are there in Calcutta?" This triggers an idea for a story about Calcutta's pollution -- and the aspiring journalist dreams of myriads of burner-toting citizens invading the publisher's home demanding redress. Maybe he is finally on the way to a story that matters.

Two couples belonging to different social strata got intertwined by coincidences face different kinds crisis on a day. The corporate executive and his wife face an unforeseen and bewildering situation when they confront a burglar first and later the burglar's wife. Meanwhile an expensive necklace went missing from their apartment and was later discovered shining on the burglar's wife who claimed it's ownership!

Nandita, a nurse, one day encounters a case of bomb blast. The patient was none other than a criminal, who makes memories flash past her mind. This is the same man who raped her six years ago.

Adapted from "Dui nomberer asami" written by Nilanjan Chaterjee. 'Kaler Rakhal' ( The Understudy), is a musical depicting the lives of colorful 'Bahurupis' ( The itinerant performers ) in rural India, mainly in Bengal region. The story also focuses on contemporary social and political issues.
