Night Is Short

A man is notified of his father's imminent death. He travels to his father in a remote Ukrainian village, recalling his childhood during the disastrous forced collectivization and artificial famine (Holodomor) of the 1930s by the Soviet regime. The film was heavily cut due to censorship by the Soviet Government.

Follows a young soldier and poet at the beginning of World War II in 1941. After being wounded while trying to save his commander, he finds himself behind enemy lines and goes through an arduous journey of survival and trials as he makes his way to a partisan detachment. Throughout his ordeal, the soldier reads poems by wartime poets.

The story is about a brave boy who never takes off his hat.

The film’s plot spans two eras: the 1930s and the present. Inspired by Charlie Chaplin’s The Gold Rush, Stalin ordered gold mining in the Soviet Union using political prisoners, appointing his film projectionist as the head of the Kolyma mines. The projectionist enthusiastically extracted gold, made bullets from it, and received the Order of Lenin. Over 70 years later, journalist Mykola Vorotnytskyi finds a businessman’s body with the Order of Lenin and a gold bullet. Despite an investigation revealing the killer, Mykola chooses not to disclose the name, prioritizing ethics over a monetary reward.
