He travels to his father in a remote Ukrainian village, recalling his childhood during the disastrous forced collectivization and artificial famine (Holodomor) of the 1930s by the Soviet regime. The film was heavily cut due to censorship by the Soviet Government.

Varya Kravets remains on her native collective farm after graduating from school. Her first love also came to her. The death of her beloved is all the more unexpected for her. Fellow villagers are helping to overcome the crisis.

After being wounded while trying to save his commander, he finds himself behind enemy lines and goes through an arduous journey of survival and trials as he makes his way to a partisan detachment. Throughout his ordeal, the soldier reads poems by wartime poets.

But that's not all... Filming is done. The actress takes off the luxurious fur coat she rented for the shoot. The actor changes his clothes too. Now they look nothing like their characters. Their daughter runs up to them. Real life, away from the screen, begins with its worries and cares.

The film’s plot spans two eras: the 1930s and the present. Inspired by Charlie Chaplin’s The Gold Rush, Stalin ordered gold mining in the Soviet Union using political prisoners, appointing his film projectionist as the head of the Kolyma mines. The projectionist enthusiastically extracted gold, made bullets from it, and received the Order of Lenin. Over 70 years later, journalist Mykola Vorotnytskyi finds a businessman’s body with the Order of Lenin and a gold bullet. Despite an investigation revealing the killer, Mykola chooses not to disclose the name, prioritizing ethics over a monetary reward.

The story is about a brave boy who never takes off his hat.
