The Hares

COMPANIONS deals with the love between people and dogs. It’s made up of scenes of intimacy—caresses, habits, games, cares, stories of coming and loss, of protection, and uprooting. The stories intertwine and make up a map of love and its enigmas.

In the ranks of the Japanese army during WWII, there existed what was known as comfort women. In the present, that term was replaced by a definition that is closer to reality—they were women who had been kidnapped and turned into sex slaves. After a long period of humiliation, the victims remained quiet, but some of them built up the courage to write about their ordeals in a series of letters. Cecilia Kang’s new documentary recovers those testimonies in order to talk about the way in which History and social mandates affect the lives of Korean women in Argentina, from the perspective of a young acting student who, after coming into contact with this correspondence, allows herself to reflect on the community she lives in and understand more about the traditions of her people as well as her own family history.

Cecilia is too afraid one night to let her housekeeper's son into the house. The next day his dead body is found.

Marcos and his family work as ranch hands. While his father and brother handle the heavier tasks, Marcos stays home, close to his mother. Silvia visited Moscow in the late 1960s, during the Soviet regime's heyday. There, she saw the structuralist-designed complexes designed to house working-class families. Upon returning to Buenos Aires, she discovered that the same collectivist spirit was embedded in the buildings constructed by the El Hogar Obrero cooperative. Embracing the ideal of socialism, Silvia abandoned everything, including her husband and children, to move into one of these apartments and write a novel in which she planned to portray its more than 200 owners. Shortly after, she traveled to Italy, and her trail was lost forever. Half a century later, a niece found her manuscripts and decided to bring to life on film what had been left unfinished in literature, combining archival material with scenes of the current inhabitants.

With a career spanning more than 70 years, Gyula Kosice is one of the most renowned contemporary art artists in Latin America. The film portrays the sculptor and poet in the construction of his own myth, revealing the person who supports it.
