Last Days of Solitary

Last Days of Solitary

2017 · 80 min · Documentary

In 2011, Maine State Prison launched a pioneering reform program to scale back its use of solitary confinement. Bafta and Emmy-winning film-maker Dan Edge and his co-director Lauren Mucciolo were given unprecedented access to the solitary unit - and filmed there for more than three years. The result is an extraordinary and harrowing portrait of life in solitary - and a unique document of a radical and risky experiment to reform a prison. The US is the world leader in solitary confinement. More than 80,000 American prisoners live in isolation, some have been there for years, even decades. Solitary is proven to cause mental illness, it is expensive, and it is condemned by many as torture. And yet for decades, it has been one of the central planks of the American criminal justice system.

To coincide with COP28, the two-part arte documentary (originally from PBS Frontline/BBC under the title "Big Oil vs. The World" / "The Power of Big Oil") shows how oil companies and politicians have, for decades, sowed doubt about the causes of climate change and obstructed necessary countermeasures. In light of the growing threat of natural disasters, heat waves, and floods, the film examines the precise reasons for this long-standing obstruction and questions the responsibility of powerful oil companies like ExxonMobil.

Right-wing extremist acts of violence are increasing in Germany. The documentary traces how extremists have developed plans of overthrow and have carried out terrorist plots as well as assaults on Jews or migrants and also how far-right extremists infiltrated security services, which are actually there to protect the population and the state from such attacks. This raises the question of what the German authorities are doing to confront the growing problem and what options they have for action to counter the rising right-wing extremism in Germany.
