The streets of Zagreb are empty because of a rumored vampire who attacks lonely women. To the office of psychiatrist, Franjo Glogowetz, there arrives a strange visitor, Teobald Majer. He is convinced that he is a vampire from the 16th century, and tells Franz that the members of his family, Glogovac, were famous vampire hunters. Naturally, Franz does not take him seriously but his wife, Barbara, likes the stranger a lot and even believes his story. In the meantime, Franz's two relatives, Jambrek and Jurek, arrive and get caught up in the mess.

Ante returned to his small village in the Dalmatian Hinterland and turned to alcoholism. Duško moved to Banja Luka and continued his life as a professional volleyball player, trying to be the best possible father for his young daughter Ingrid and get over the recent news of his wife's affair with his best man. Their routine is suddenly thwarted when a mysterious man in black named Antiša enters their lives and takes them away to an abanndoned warehouse near Zagreb, offering them a large sum of money under one simple condition: if they testify against a war criminal on an international tribunal.

It is 1945 in Zagreb, and everyone is settling into the new regime following the disturbances of the war. Matilda is a wealthy widow of a war hero and has an apartment so spacious that she is required to take a boarder. Fortunately for her, the handsome young Lt. Horvat, the communist housing officer, has taken a fancy to her and has assigned his fiancee to be Matilda's new roommate. Where Matilda is soft and rounded, Lilijana is hard, skinny, and given to revolutionary pronouncements rather than tender endearments. The lieutenant loves them both, though he naturally finds Matilda more attractive. His situation is simplified when Lilijana, though pregnant, is transferred to another post. However, his commander is horrified that he has a lover in addition to his fiancee and demands that he choose whether to continue his career or continue his affair.

Still today, years after the war, some regions are contaminated with broken families, poverty, crime and low-grade uranium. In the middle of nowhere in Western Herzegovina, at a NATO military training range, a nine-year-old girl called Alica, together with her uncle Valentin, collects shells and scraps of grenades to sell on the black market. Valentin dies of cancer, Alica's diagnosis is not good but there's no money for therapy. Alica's journey through the Land of Wonders begins.
