Istvan Szőts’s short, Christmas-themed film starring József Bihari and Andor Ajtay, based on Mór Jókai’s novel of the same title. The premier of the film was in the Venice Film Festival in 1957, where it received recognition.

1952. The workers who have performed the reconstruction of the bridges are now needed at the construction works of the underground railway. During admission they are diluted with elements of doubtful fame and many of them are in a bad mood for the wages, too.

The two main characters of this ironic account of the general condition of intellectuals are the charming psychologist, Korin György, and the unexpected. Korin starts a television series of people in their 40s. In the afternoon just after the first section, however, he is reported to be dead as a result of a rather strange accident. Everything turns upside down.

The main character of our story is János, 18 years old in 1944, preparing for his final exams. In March, the Germans occupy the country, and the exams are moved forward — some even have to take them wearing the yellow star. Meanwhile, at the Parliament Café, he is training to be an assistant firefighter and meets one of the bread girls, Nusi.
