Hooray for Madness

During the German occupation, the Nazis plan to execute 30 men in retaliation for the death of a German soldier at the hands of the partisans. Among the men are three brothers (Giorgos Fountas, Anestis Vlachos and Giannis Fertis). The villagers ask the German officer (Zoras Tsapelis) to spare the life of one of the brothers. He accepts on the condition that their father (Lavrentis Dianellos) selects the one to remain alive.

A provincial arrives in Athens, where he is approached by two mini-patrons in order to eat his money.

The movie is about dictatorships in Greece – first, the Metaxas regime (1936-1940), and then the Colonels’ Junta (1967-74). In Part One, the Metaxas regime is depicted as a circus, where Thanasis (Thanasis Vengos) is a clown trying to conceal a young colleague’s subversive action. In Part Two, we see Thanasis suffer because of his honesty and kindness, in a country where the system’s irrationality is clearly evident.

A police officer arrests pitiable Thanasis, who admits to having stolen the trousers of a happy man in the hope of becoming happy himself, after being advised to do so by a Gypsy. He confesses that, in order to marry his girlfriend, he asked to borrow a pair of trousers, but no one would lend them to him, so he went ahead and stole a pair of trousers, but no one was willing to lend him. So he decided to steal one. The policeman assists him and finds the trouser holder and also works for Thanasis. So the latter can now marry his girlfriend and make a family.

Alexis abandons his fiancée Irene when he realizes that her family no longer has the wealth it was once famous for, which he had hoped would cover the debts he incurred through gambling. He is charmed by a singer, Veta, while previously the father of the singer in question had taken his money in an organized plan of revenge on the part of Eirini's family, for whom Veta's mother worked as a domestic helper. Eirini marries a former employee of her family, who now has his own mines and who has been in love with her for a long time. However, she will abandon him, while he will give up everything to work in a quarry. There, Eirini will meet him, remorseful.

A true story: The trial of judges Polizoidi and Tertseti for disobedience and their triumphant acquittal during the three men regency council, when king Othon of Greece was a minor. The cast of the film was enormous, with almost half of the theatrical people participating.

When Thanassis leaves the orphanage tries to do various jobs but with no consolidates. A private detective manages to find his father who is rich. Thanasis will move into his luxurious house but there will come other problems.

At the factory, a group of university students rehearse Shakespeare's Midsummer Night's Dream, and a girl from the group discovers him. The students accept him into their group, offering him a part in the play as well. One night, three young men try to destroy the props for the theatrical performance, and Giannis tries to stop them, ending up back in prison. The students manage to get him out of jail, and he embarks on a ship and leaves far away.
