King of Ayodhya

Ayodhyecha Raja, literally "The King of Ayodhya", was the first Marathi talkie. It is based on the mythological story of Raja Harishchandra of Ayodhya and his test by sage Vishwamitra, as recounted in Valmiki's epic, Ramayana. The film was also made as a double-version, Ayodhya Ka Raja (1932) in Hindi, making it the first double version talkie of Indian cinema.

Shakuntala

Following a passionate encounter with King Dushyanta (Chandramohan), the comely Shakuntala (Jayashree) finds herself pregnant and rejected by the royal court. She gives birth in a forest to a son which she names Bharat (Kumar Ganesh). When the King tracks his former lover down and tries to take her back, she flatly refuses him.

Chandrasena

Teen Batti Char Raasta

Dahej

Thakur is a proud and dignified man who loves his only daughter, Chanda, dearly. His wife and he receive a proposal for Chanda from the house of a lawyer and his wife. While Thakur accepts the proposal, he makes it clear to the lawyer that he is unable to afford any dowry. After the wedding, Chanda's mother-in-law starts harassing Chanda about her lack of dowry.

Sinhagad

Udaybhanu captures Kamlakumari who is planning to commit Sati and brings her to his fort in Kondana. Tanaji Malusare prepares to attack the fort with fifty soldiers. He manages to scale it but is killed in the battle with Udaybhanu. Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj arrives and wins the fort but he is despondent on losing his most trusted Lieutenant.

The Indian Shylock: The Original Silent Version

A social film with high melodrama, concerning a peasant (Shantaram) who loses his land to a greedy money-lender and moves to the city where he becomes a mill worker. Taking its cue from the realist tradition, the film counterposes an idyllic rural life (destroyed but the greedy money-lender who uses forged papers to steal the peasant's land) with the harsh city life. The shot of a hut accompanied by a howling dog are regarded as one of the most memorable moments of Indian cinema to date.

Agnikankan: The Branded Oath

Prince Sudhirchandra goes into hiding as an infant when his father gets overthrown by Naagraya, a greedy minister. After 20 years, Sudhirchandra returns to reclaim his throne.

Do Ankhen Barah Haath

Progressive, reform-minded young warden gets permission to take six surly murderers from prison to dilapidated country farm, to rehabilitate it and themselves through hard work and kindly guidance.

Dharmatma

Sant Eknath, a 16th-century poet-saint who challenges caste discrimination by serving and dining with the untouchables. His actions provoke outrage from orthodox Brahmins, leading to his excommunication. Despite opposition, Eknath stands firm in his belief in equality and devotion, inspiring others to join his cause and defending his principles through his spiritual teachings.

Apna Desh

During the Partition of India, Mohini is abducted and raped. Upon returning to her family, she faces rejection from society. In revenge, she becomes a smuggler, dealing in illegal arms. She falls for fellow refugee Satish, and when he's implicated, she confesses and surrenders.

Sairandhri

Set during the Pandavas’ exile in the Mahabharata, the story focuses on Draupadi living incognito as a maid-in-waiting named Sairandhari in King Virata’s palace. The arrogant Keechak becomes obsessed with her, prompting Bhima (disguised as a cook) to intervene and kill Keechak to protect her honor.

Amar Bhoopali

Veteran director V. Shantaram spins this bio-pic about poet and musician Honaji Bala, best know for popularizing the Lavani dance form and for writing the classic raga Ghanashyam Sundara Shirdhara.
