Southern Cross is Above Us

In a small seaside town lived two friends—the feisty Fedka Boiko and the thoughtful, quiet Vovka. One day, the boys called a doctor to visit a sick person and began to visit him. That is how an extraordinary person entered their lives — polar pilot Pavel Ivanovich Fedoseenko, who turned out to be a shortwave radio amateur. From him, the boys learned about distant Antarctica for the first time — and vowed to become polar explorers. In the Antarctic village of Mirny, polar explorers Vladimir Sazonov and Fyodor Boyko meet—old friends who haven't seen each other in many years, who reminisce about their childhood in a southern coastal town and the romance of long-distance radio communications on short radio waves.

Retro Threesome

Set in contemporary Moscow, this comedy drama from 72-year-old director Pyotr Todorovsky is a remake of Abram Room's controversial silent film Bed and Sofa (1927). Actor Sergei leaves his wife and drops in on friend Kostya, married to Rita. Rita and Sergei pair off after Kostya goes away on a business trip, and when Kostya returns, they become a threesome. This melodrama revolves around the post-war meeting reunion an intelligent front-line officer, now happily married, and a woman street vendor. This encounter reawakens in them submerged feelings of gratitude and tenderness as the officer recalls how they met during the war and what she used to mean to him. Now he learns that she is alone with a small daughter, the girl's father having been killed at the front.

The Taurus Constellation

Todorovsky's film examines life in a provincial Russian town (that is too small to even appear on the map) just outside of Stalingrad during the famous WWII Battle. This is NOT a traditional war film, and the epic events of the battle take place almost entirely off screen. Instead, Todorovsky outlines a crude love triangle between three young people caught up in the harsh Russian winter. The stark winter settings, and the characters' struggle for survival, are what make this film one worth watching.

The Two Fedors

At the end of the Second World War, Fedor is demobilized and returns home where he meets a homeless boy, small Fedor. They decide to live together. The adult works in the building trade and the boy goes to school and looks after the house. They get on very well until Natacha arrives in big Fedor's life. After marrying big Fedor, Natacha tries to win the child's love. But he remains hostile.
