Khon Boys

A documentary recording the lives of Khon students in their last years of study. They spent six years under the rules of the military regime after the 2014 coup d’etat. The coup granted the regime power to change many things, especially education which became more focused on the monarchy and royal glorification instead of basic human values. While the world is becoming awakened to human rights, the military regime deems them against their own values. The shooting of the film began at the time of the king’s succession, shortly after which there was a great social awakening in Thailand. Meanwhile, the authorities used state violence and oppression in an effort to eliminate dissidents, even when they were just high school and university students.

Thunska Pansittivorakol's documentary covers three disparatae topics: Gay life & sex, the 2004 Tak Bai incident, & the 2005 execution of two Iranian teenagers.

Middle-earth

A white dream of a gay film maker. Two naked men on a white sofa. Yet it remains in the imagination. Pansittivorakul is the most outspoken gay filmmaker in Thailand. Or in the whole of Southeast Asia, you could say. The fact that last year he received a Silpathorn Award, an official state prize for artists, was one of the few encouraging events in a country with a military regime and unpredictable censorship. The film is an ode to the male body. Two naked men on a white sofa. And a film maker who restrains himself.

Homogeneous, Empty Time

What feeds nationalist ideologies? They always arise in 'empty time', asserts this documentary on nationalism in Thailand. Various groups are observed, from military cadets to pupils at a Christian boarding school. They have very different views on politics or religion, but they share boundless confidence in the monarchy.

Science fiction about a future Thailand. Futuristic, experimental, homo-erotic and with elements of a political essay. With a richness of themes and impressions that wouldn't get past the censor in Thailand. The maker doesn't mince his words and isn't afraid to look reality in the eye.

The Terrorists

A black cloak of forgetting, suppressing and covering has descended on the events that took place in Bangkok in spring 2010. Black as the night of complete darkness in which the film opens. Two men are in a fishing boat talking. One feels more than one sees that the seawater around them is warm and smooth, teeming with brightly-colored fish. By night, the rubber plantation also comes across as enticing and full of secrets, until lurid reminders of the bloody massacre flash up.

Behind the Blur

An insightful documentary about Thai cinema, which features a colourful and long running film history, yet struggles as the industry attempts to move forward. This film examines the past and focuses on the Thai New Wave since 1997 by combining film clips, and interviews from Thai directors and others artists, like Asian hip-hop sensation Thaitanium, who are trying to create a more personal style of art.

sPACEtIME

Four men travel to a place of their memory. Two of them used to date ten years ago. The story is told through an interviewer and interviewees. Past stories are unearthed and overlap with the present, leading to a new story that seems like something totally different from what it started from. When they start playing Truth or Dare, secrets are revealed, yet it is uncertain whether they are real or merely lies. Their secrets, told amidst an atmosphere filled with destruction, death, and hope, are sarcastic, ridiculous, nonsensical, obsessed, and severely painful.

Santikhiri Sonata

This film was shot in an area called Santikhiri, which means ‘the Hill of Peace’. After General Prem’s government came to power in the 1980s, everything—drugs, communism, corruption, human trafficking, and stateless persons—was entirely suppressed to foster order and peace.

Head On
