Set during the Japanese occupation of Korea, Bun-yi is sold into marriage as the wife of Young-gu, the intellectually disabled son of a wealthy family involved in secretly funding the independence movement. Following his wife’s dying wish, Young-gu moves to Seoul with his young son and a loyal servant, Yong-pal. Struggling to adapt to city life, he encounters scams, hardship, and fleeting moments of connection, only to lose what little stability he builds. An elderly man's son, dissatisfied at living with his father's senility, forces his wife to abandon his father in the park. Another couple take pity on him and invite him to their home, but when they realize how much care he requires, they return him to the park.

Yeong-kyeong is a famous musician who is seduced by Dong-min. Dong-min wanted a one night fling, but Yeong-kyeong pities him, believing hs story of being trapped in a loveless marriage. Dong-min has no intention of leaving his wife, however she finds out about his affair and leaves him. Dong-min escapes to his uncle's cabin in the mountains, but Yeong-kyeong follows him even there.

Jang, a North Korean general, surrenders to Captain Lee of the South. Lee presses him for information which Jang agrees to supply on the condition that Lee helps him locate his wife who had defected to South Korea many years earlier. Coincidently, Jang's wife is now married to Captain Lee who must decide whether or not to re-unite them for the sake of his country.
