The first installment in the Yakuza/Like a Dragon franchise, which has shipped over 30 million copies worldwide, has been adapted into a live action work that remains almost faithful to the original. Produced by the cast and staff of the hugely popular franchise Unification of Japan, which depicts the Japanese underworld, the adaptation is fully supervised by Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio. The story follows the events leading up to the video game Yakuza Kiwami 3 & Dark Ties.

Receiving a request from a marriage broker operating in a run-down area, Hidari (Hideo Nakano) and Yamato (Yasukaze Motomiya) find themselves helping with a fake marriage. Many of this broker's cases involve the Goroza family, who are involved in human trafficking and insurance fraud, manipulating household registries. Amidst this, Yamato's fake bride, Shirayuki, is brutally murdered after having her organs harvested. Angered by this heinous act, Left and Yamato, without any directive from the third-generation leader of the Kurotetsu Alliance, Sakaki (Sho Aikawa), take on a rival gang. Thus begins a bloody purge driven solely by their unbacked "chains."

Tatsunobu Sagara (Kazuyoshi Ozawa), a wakagashira (underboss) of the Natsume-gumi, was expanding his influence by leveraging the reputation of Mitsuru Gono (Shiro), wakagashira of the Tanba-gumi. Meanwhile, Daisuke Kanamori (Hideyuki Kawahara), also of the Tanba-gumi, was aggressively encroaching upon business territories monopolized by the Natsume-gumi.
