To mark Music Day, ten European orchestras will perform some of the finest piano concertos alongside prestigious soloists and under the baton of renowned conductors from various cities across the continent. The programme for this exceptional concert features works by Brahms, Grieg, Chopin, Beethoven, Ravel and Mozart.

In the second part of this magnificent concert celebrating music from across Europe, Lukas Sternath, Martha Argerich, Bruce Liu and Hayato Sumino perform the finest piano concertos by Beethoven, Schumann, Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninoff.

Johann Sebastian Bach’s *St John Passion*, performed in Leipzig by the young boys of the St Thomas Church Choir, which the composer conducted for twenty-seven years.

Axel Kohler, the internationally renowned countertenor has brought Admeto into the modern era in timeless style by the skillful application of imaginative theatrical digressions. Köhler's production at the Halle Opernhaus revisits a work that encompasses comedy, tragedy and almost absurd grotesqueness, couching it in the convincing metaphor of a modern hospital.

Fifty years after the death of Dmitri Shostakovich, the Gewandhaus in Leipzig is paying tribute to one of the most played composers of the 20th century with a festival entirely dedicated to him. The programme for the opening concert in the futuristic setting of the Great Hall includes the Piano Concerto No. 2 in F major, with Daniil Trifonov as soloist, and the Symphony No. 4 in C minor.

On the shores of Lake Lucerne, Riccardo Chailly and the Lucerne Festival Orchestra continue their Rachmaninov odyssey with the Symphonic Movement, a rarely performed piece, as well as the Symphonic Dances and the Scherzo in D minor. The highlight of the evening is the Piano Concerto No. 1, performed by Alexander Malofeev, a rising star on the keyboard. Since its founding in 2003, the Lucerne Festival Orchestra has established itself as a benchmark in the interpretation of Mahler. The composer's Symphony No. 10 and his Rückert Lieder, performed by Elīna Garanča and conducted by Riccardo Chailly will open the 2025 Lucerne Festival with a tribute to Pierre Boulez, another figure of this renowned festival.

The Triple Concerto is one of Beethoven's less frequently performed works - probably also because it requires three soloists and makes considerable demands on them. ARTE presents the Concerto for Violin, Violoncello, Piano and Orchestra in C major at the Gewandhaus in Leipzig, performed by an excellent trio of soloists. It is accompanied by the Gewandhaus Orchestra under the direction of Herbert Blomstedt.

To mark the 90th birthday of Estonian composer Arvo Pärt, a special concert featuring three of his iconic works, recorded in Görlitz, Germany.

Pēteris Vasks is one of Europe’s great contemporary composers who mixes a deep connection to nature with a profoundly Christian understanding of the world to create his meditative music. This concert is a tribute to the Latvian composer on his 80th birthday with the Latvian Radio Choir and Sinfonietta Riga. Arvo Pärt has succeeded in using musical means to plant the spirituality of Eastern Europe in Western musical consciousness and make modern classical music accessible to a wide audience. He turned 90 on 11 September 2025.
