Julia gives birth to a boy, Iván, whose father is unknown. His mother, Mrs. Brackets, is unable to accept a bastard grandson into the family. Marta, Julia's friend, proves to be her only lifeline despite the turbulent waters. Though we never hear their names or see them interact with the world outside of their stylish desert house, their exchanges are the sort that speak volumes with a well-placed breath. Clearly, their friendship can never be the same, and she’s unwilling to accept that change.
