The 1978 World Cup was played in Argentina, and ended with the home nation winning its first World Cup gold in history. Holland's golden generation lost their second World Cup final in a row. Sweden drew with Brazil but still finished last in their group. Argentina's Mario Kempes won the top scorer's award, while other stars in the tournament included Cubillas from Peru and Boniek from Poland.

The 1982 World Cup was played in Spain. Brazil charmed the world with their entertaining and spectacular football, with players like Zico, Eder and Falcao. But it was Italy who ultimately emerged as world champions, and Italian Paolo Rossi won the top scorer award.

The 1986 World Cup was played in Mexico. It was the tournament when Denmark made their World Cup debut and charmed the world, England's Gary Lineker won the top scorer's award and above all - it was when Argentina's Diego Maradona seriously presented himself as the world's best footballer.

The 1990 World Cup in Italy was the first time since 1978 that Sweden had qualified for a championship. Expectations were high for Olle Nordin's national team, but it ended in failure. Some of the players who left their mark in the tournament were Cameroon's 38-year-old striker Roger Milla and Italy's unexpected top scorer Salvatore Schillaci.

The summer of 1994, with the World Cup in the USA, became an enchanted Swedish football summer. Brolin, Dahlin, Ravelli and all the other bronze heroes created football fever throughout the country, and were celebrated at their homecoming by 50,000 people in Rålambshovsparken.

The 1998 World Cup in France was a huge celebration for the home nation. France eventually became world champions for the first time ever after defeating Brazil in the final. Croatia played in its first World Cup tournament and surprisingly took bronze, with the team's star striker Davor Suker becoming the tournament's top scorer.

The 2002 FIFA World Cup in South Korea and Japan was the first World Cup to be played in Asia. Sweden was drawn into what was known as the "Group of Death" along with Argentina, England and Nigeria. Sweden sensationally won the group after, among other things, Anders Svensson's classic free kick goal against Argentina. Brazil eventually won the World Cup gold medal and Ronaldo became the tournament's top scorer.

The best from the 2010 party in the South Africa of the vuvuzela. Maradona, Lagerbäck, Svennis, Tchabalala, Sneijder and the octopus Paul are some of those who appear when Ola Bränholm and Pelle Wittheden look back. The obvious protagonist of the World Cup chronicle is the little handy man who decided the World Cup final, Andrés Iniesta. In a candid interview with Johanna Frändén, Iniesta talks about the t-shirt tribute to his dead friend Dani Jarque, about the tough start with a loss against Switzerland and of course about the fantastic feeling of having decided the world's biggest sports party.

We return to the days of June and July 2014 when the best soccer players in the world were on site during the World Cup in Brazil. SVT's Björn Nordling gives us the chance to relive the most glorious goals, the best passes and much more.
