Topping the list of 100 Best Egyptian Films, this classic musical melodrama launched the film career of one of Egypt’s greatest singers and composers, Mohamed Abdel Wahhab. Galal Effendi, the son of an impoverished aristocrat, is forced to leave his studies to seek employment. After a short stint as a clerk, however, Galal discovers his musical talents and finds success as a popular singer. Through its story of upward mobility based on merit rather than influence, the film examines the emergence of Egyptian middle-class identity.

Dunia meets the rich, frivolous young man, Mohamed. An illegitimate relationship develops between them and she becomes pregnant with his child. Mohamed disappears and she cannot face anyone with her child, so she decides to kill him. Her secret is revealed and she goes to prison. She decides to take revenge on him and searches for him until she finds him. She hides her past from him, but she is surprised that he shows her his love and decides to marry her and introduces her to his family, which puts her in a conflict between love and revenge. The mother reveals Dunia's past and she decides to commit suicide.

Raouf marries her after he is certain that his love for her is stronger than his love for Yasriya.

Led by his lust and his unrepentant consciousness, Hamdy abandons his family and takes a french lady as his mistress. When his mistress cheats on him, Hamdy shoots her lover in retaliation. After spending his prison sentence, he returns to Egypt, haunted by his sense of guilt.
