The Brutal

Chizu becomes enchanted by the book of botanical specimens that her late grandfather has left and looks for traces of her grandfather that she'd never met. The age-indeterminate nature of Chizu, who smokes, and the astonishing ending have resulted in a unique work that easily crosses many boundaries.

Takeo Kikuchi is a steel factory worker who lives with his girlfriend Aki. One day, Kikuchi runs into an old friend named Jiro Soda, also known as "Denjiro", whom Kikuchi shares a deep secret since the day two encountered a certain “incident” in the past. It seems to be that Kikuchi's senior Ito, and Ito's business partner Takaido, also a hunter named Umezawa have something to be involved with, but the truth was not something to be easily spoken. From the day of that unexpected reunion, their peaceful life begins to fall apart...

The man got done with work and left the town. He arrived at the unstaffed station and went into the forest in the night with a shovel. “No need for fight.” What does he seek for in the forest? What does he dig for? For movie, language is explanatory and should be the minimum.

A man with a wife and child attempts to run off with a hostess, but he doesn’t show up at the place they agreed to meet. The hostess continues to wait fully aware he won’t come. Then a man calls out to her…. “The Dork, The Girl, and The Douchebag,” the latest film in three years by OKUDA Yosuke who made his commercial film debut with “Tokyo Playboy Club” (11), is a powerful ensemble drama intertwining a drug dealer, a yakuza, an ex-convict youth, and others. It can be said the film inherits the setting of his previous work, but the intense realism exhibited in the raw chaos far exceeds the previous film and amply points to OKUDA’s future potential. Portraying the complex male character who only lives for violence, OKUDA’s talents as an actor should also not be overlooked.
