Finn Ek has a lover, Monica. When his wife Cecilia finds out, she is devastated and leaves town.

The film takes place during a time of famine. Norway has been at war with England and Sweden, and times are tough. Gjest Baardsen has gotten into trouble with the law, apparently over a trivial matter. But Gjest breaks free, and instead it is the sheriff who is locked up in handcuffs. And Gjest continues to flee, with sheriffs and good people in tow.

For actor Carsten Winger, his portrayal of the character in the movie was considered a victory and a big achievement. "A sure success", "Impressive" and "A victory for Norwegian Films" are some lines from the critics. "Skadeskutt" is one of the breakthroughs within Norwegian film making.

An American bomber is shot down on the Norwegian coast during World War II. The airmen bail out and land at different locations. In spite of the German search for them, the Norwegian resistance picks them up and hides them in the attic of the local church, a center of operations. Things become tense, however, when the hideout is spotted by a notorious collaborator, and soon the protagonist, Hans, has to get the airmen to Sweden.

The city boy Rolf gets a job on a big farm, and soon lies about finding gold. We see the rise of gold fever while the corn rots away.
