Barbro is a young, happy girl, with a lot of male acquaintances. She unfortunately meets men that infects her with syphilis. Without being aware of this Barbro transmits the disease to other men. Medical doctor Bernard tries to help her.

The film is about a group of artists in the Klara Quarter. Ararat, a poor painter in Stockholm, one day meet his ex-fiance Elisabeth who is now a rich widow.
