His mastery of the German language, steel nerves and an ability to manipulate others help him to use his connections in the SS to ascend the ladder of the German intelligence. He uses his position to identify sympathetic Germans, who help him to procure vital intelligence, and to help local resistance movements in their collective fight against Nazism.

Prince Stepan Kasatsky is an officer, an ardent, proud young man, and a big fan of the tsar. Kasatsky is going to marry, but at the last moment he learns from the bride that she was the mistress of the emperor. The prince is deeply disappointed in social life, he takes a monastic vow and leaves the capital. Faith in God was to save the soul, but passions and worldly temptations don't leave Kasatsky.

The movie takes place in the late 1930s in the Far East. A group of pioneering surveyors led by Kirill Kostomarov is to lay the route of a railroad through remote taiga areas. Nevertheless, strictly on schedule loaded ships left the harbor. A severe storm off the southern coast of Africa seriously tested the fortitude of the two crews. The Germans were the first to enter the storm...

At the age of 43, landowner Kirsanov is visited by his son Arkady, a recent university graduate, accompanied by the self-assured young doctor, Yevgeny Bazarov. Kirsanov's older brother, Pavel Petrovich, and Bazarov quickly develop mutual dislike. A few days later, Arkady introduces Bazarov to the young, beautiful, and wealthy widow Odintsova, who immediately captures Bazarov's interest.

The young teacher Lobanovich, who has just graduated from the seminary, comes to the remote Polessky village of Telshino to teach the peasant children to read and write.
