Bank director L.W. Jacobsen resides in a small provincial town. He is not particularly interested in his wife, Elsebeth, but rather in teacher and city council member Miss Mortensen. Thorsen, the town's manufacturer, is a member of the same city council group as Jacobsen. Then Don Olsen comes to town. Olsen is not interested in the upper class, but rather in people. We follow Ellehammer, his loyal assistant Pehtersen, and his patient wife as they battle creditors and widespread ridicule until, on September 12, 1906, Ellehammer becomes the first person in Europe to get a flying machine off the ground on the island of Lindholm.

The film begins with Baron von Rosensteen's funeral. As Rosensteen has no heirs, the old Rosensteen Castle is to be inherited by the Rabenfeldt family. Supreme Court Attorney Berg visits the widow baroness about a document found among the papers of her son, the deceased baron. It turns out that the baron had a child out of wedlock with a non-noble woman. The widow baroness and the Supreme Court attorney decide to find the child, as this would mean that an heir to the castle had been found. The child turns out to be a girl named Anne Tofte, who works at a gas station with her uncle Lars Tofte and his colleague Hans Høy. They persuade Anne to live with the baroness for a while, which she is not very keen on. The widow tries to teach Anne to be a fine lady, rather than the tomboyish workshop mechanic her uncle had raised her to be.

But when Thorup's son, Henrik, unexpectedly shows up at Mosegaarden, the three brothers' sinister plans are thrown into disarray.

Several months pass, and the baron and Amelie are to be married. When Bierbaum finds out about this, he seeks out Amelie. Little does he know that Hans has returned from Germany.

The painter Jørgen has talent but no luck. His upstairs neighbor is a ballet dancer and may not have much talent, but she does have good luck. Director Bang promises her that he will support her theater if she takes the lead role herself. Else is not particularly enthusiastic about the arrangement and Bang's courtship. Jørgen also has his eye on the beautiful girl, but is too shy to speak out. He's not happy about the development either.
