The story is based on a novel by Wilbur Smith, which in turn is very loosely based on events involving the light cruiser SMS Königsberg, which was sunk after taking refuge in Rufigi delta in 1915.

Sergeant Cork is a British detective television series which first aired between 1963 and 1968 on ITV. It was a police procedural show that followed the efforts of two police officers and their battle against crime in Victorian London. In all 66 hour-long episodes were aired during the five-year run, although the last episode was not broadcast until January 1968, 16 months after the others. Journalist Tom Sutcliffe has credited it as a first example of the use of the Victorian-era policeman in a television crime series. A 1969 review in The Age opined that rather than suspense, the strengths of the series were its "excellent period settings and wonderfully thick pea-soupers" which "add up to splendid evocative stuff", as well as the performance of star John Barrie. At no time during the whole series is Sergeant Cork's first name given.

Emergency: Ward 10 is a British television soap shown on ITV between 1957 and 1967. Like The Grove Family, a series shown by the BBC between 1954 and 1957, Emergency: Ward 10 is considered to be one of British television's first major soap operas. Set in Oxbridge General Hospital, this soap opera focused equally on the lives and loves of its medical staff and the pressure of their work.

Hazell is a British television drama based on the novel series by Terry Venables and Gordon Williams (collectively known as P.B. Yuill), and starring Nicholas Bell as James Hazell, a 'smart parody' of Philip Marlowe and Sam Spade. The program ran for 2 series, from January 1978 to July 1979.

Shades of Greene is a British television series based on short stories written by the author Graham Greene. Mrs Thursday is a British comedy-drama produced by Associated Television, devised by Lord Ted Willis and featured scripts by Jack Rosenthal. It stars veteran British actress Kathleen Harrison as Alice Thursday, a Cockney cleaning lady who inherits £10 million and the controlling interest in a multinational company upon the death of her employer. Hugh Manning played Richard Hunter, is Mrs Thursday's butler, business adviser and confidant.

Market in Honey Lane was an ATV British television soap opera which was broadcast between 1967 and March 1969. This cockney drama set was in an East London street market and covered the traders and customers. It was created by Louis Marks. Initially shown weekly in September 1968, it became a twice weekly afternoon show and the name was shortened to just Honey Lane. According to www.lostshows.com, only 13 of the original 91 episodes still exist in the archives. Main characters were played by John Bennett, Michael Golden, Ray Lonnen, Peter Birrel, Brian Rawlinson, Pat Nye, Basil Henson and Anna Wing, the latter finding new fame in the BBC soap EastEnders nearly 20 years later and which had a similar premise. The show was recorded at ATV Elstree, the same studio complex that is now home to EastEnders. Ray Lonnen would go on to star in another ATV soap, Crossroads, but in the Carlton Television produced Crossroads of 2001.
