One day, six-year-old Alyosha made friends with his uncle Vitya, an avid hunter, who promised to take the boy hunting in the fall. From then on, Alyosha waited for autumn to come and prepared seriously for the hunt. But Uncle Vitya forgot his promise. When hunting season arrived and Alyosha realized he had been deceived, he shared his disappointment with his parents—and his father did everything he could to make the hunt happen.

A famous painter lives in idleness in the estate of the landlord Belokurov. Once he meets a family of Volchaninov's living in the neighborhood, in which there are two daughters: the eldest (Lydia), a serious and strict girl with convictions, who tries to help ordinary people and doesn't like the artist very much for his idleness, and the youngest (Zhenya or Misyus), which soon takes a great interest in the artist. The painter also falls in love with Zhenya, but Lydia destroys their happiness ...

After what happened, Semyon Afanasyevich and Galina Konstantinovna came to work at an orphanage in the Ukrainian village of Chereshenki. Children from many different places gathered here. The couple devoted all their years to these children, who did not know their parents.

Rural doctor Ivan Boyko receives an invitation to a clinic in the capital. Here the hero meets an institute friend, Dmitry Kostenko, a successful associate professor. Very soon Ivan becomes convinced of the moral dishonesty of Dmitry, who appropriated the scientific work of his modest colleague Vennik. Boyko exposes the dishonest candidate of sciences to the team.

German troops leave a small town located on the border of Western Ukraine and Poland. The Pilsudians seize power in the city. Bolshevik, who returned from prison, heads the underground revolutionary committee.
