When a charming young man arrives to serve as a private secretary for the eccentric Helene Kiepergass a, he quickly becomes entangled in a series of mysterious events in her house. Amidst the arrival of a suspicious "nephew" from Mexico and a house full of peculiar guests, a romance blossoms between the secretary and the lovely companion Mary. He eventually is able to unmask two confidence tricksters amidst the residents.

Walter Gruber once belonged to a group of unscrupulous, money-grubbing poachers. Now released from prison, he is determined never to touch a gun again. He was imprisoned for poaching, but they couldn't prove he fired the shot that wounded forester Kuhnert. Robert eventually blackmails Walter into rejoining the poachers. When the gang shoots the old forester Kuhnert, Robert shifts suspicion onto Walter.

A German scientist murders his fiancée during World War II when he learns that she has been selling the results of his secret research to the enemy.

With her daughter Anita, a young singer, the widow Marianne von der Halden undertakes a journey into the past. She wants to see her former admirers again. One of them is the chamber singer Paul Schneider, who only remembers his childhood sweetheart with irony. They meet the former student Werner Birkner at his wedding, where Anita meets the teacher Michael Brantner. But the encounters make no impression on Marianne. Until she meets her former great love again at a concert given by her daughter, the general director Elmers. The concert is a resounding success and Marianne reconnects with Elmers, who is still unaware that Anita is his daughter.

However, the will includes a clause stipulating that the chest may only be opened after a three-month period, and Rogge will only inherit the fortune if he fulfills two conditions within that time: he must abstain from alcohol at work, and he must find and marry a wife. A con man then tries to seduce Rogge and arrange for his accomplice, the sophisticated Olga, to marry him. But in the end, Rogge not only finds the right woman but also experiences a major surprise.

Father Scherzer generally buries himself in the books of the castle library, which he is responsible for managing. He is a warm-hearted but somewhat overwhelmed father to his five daughters, ranging from a preschooler to two teenage girls to a successful press photographer who flirts with a dashing dentist.
