Bavarian allotment tyrant Gerti has had enough. Her once sweet little granddaughter Merci has turned into a pubescent monster. Now Merci is also falling in love with Berlin hipster beau Simon, of all people, who has recently started chilling out in the garden next door. Gerti now fights the troublemaker in her allotment garden colony with all means at her disposal.

Based on the classic 19th century tale by German writer/composer E.T.A. Hoffmann, the film investigates the tale's themes of obsession and madness, emphasizing expressionist imagery and theatrical style. The story relates the life of the young student Nathanael, whose childhood memories are haunted by a sinister man. As a child, Nathanael believed this dark figure to be the mythic Sandman, who puts children to sleep by stealing their eyes. When confronted by this same evil presence as an adult, he is pushed toward madness as he tries to confront his childhood fears.

Georg "Schorsch" Kempter is a gardener in a small Bavarian town, working day-in, day-out in his nursery, which is facing bankruptcy. He doesn't like to talk much. He never has. He embarks onto a journey into the unknown, to places he has never seen before, full of odd and special encounters - and with every take-off and every landing, this tough man's heart slowly warms up to what you might call an idea of happiness.

The lives of childless couple Nela and Josch change abruptly after the accidental death of Josch's ex-girlfriend Rosanna. The deceased leaves behind her 14-year-old daughter Aimée, who the couple take in after some back and forth. The couple sensitively try to help the girl overcome her pain. But Aimée, who doesn't speak for a long time, is stubborn and unpredictable. Nela fears that the teenager wants to destroy her marriage and makes serious accusations against the girl. Josch, who is absorbed in the role of family man, doesn't seem to notice.
