Emma (Line Kruse) is an eleven year-old only child from a wealthy Danish family. Emma's parents seem more interested in their own interests than in her. One evening when Emma overhears her mother talking about how tragic it must be to have your child kidnapped, Emma decides to stage her own kidnapping. She soon meets Malthe, a kind-hearted, child-like, naïve sewer cleaner who literally stumbles on to her. She convinces Malthe that she is a Russian princess whose family is being chased by Bolsheviks, so Malthe lets Emma stay with him in his very modest abode. After being "kidnapped" for a few days, Emma decides to return home. But, just as she is about to return, she overhears a couple of servants talking about how her parents don't seem to be very upset over her dilemma....

By chance, Pyrus has found Gyldengrød's old laboratory, which has been locked up for many years. When the National Archivist's son-in-law Krusø catches a severe winter cold, Pyrus is eager to help and tries to cure Krusø with an elixir from Gyldengrød's laboratory. The effect is disastrous. Krusø shrinks to the size of an elf and tumbles around confused in the archive. Krusø comes into possession of the elves' magic book, which enables him to conjure himself into various books. And misfortune befalls the country's prime minister as Krusø tours the telephone directories, the overview of traffic planning in Copenhagen, and worst of all, the finance bill itself. He has a job as a delivery boy at a grocery store, but supplements his income by trading on the black market. The black market goods, which can be sold at the München Kroen, are obtained in exchange for things Herbert has stolen from his mother or the grocer. Eventually, he even sells his mother's grand piano. A black American officer, whom he has befriended, intervenes when the business starts to go too far.

Pyrus is a young elf who lives in The Danish National Archives, where Chief Archivist Birger Bertramsen work alongside his new assistant Josefine Brahe. The young elf lives together with the old Archivist elf Gyldengrød and the elf girl Kandis, who just moved in and the. Pyrus complains that he cannot get Christmas-presents, as Santa Claus doesn't give presents to elf's. Pyrus tries to conjure him with the help of a magical book to talk to him, but unfortunately Santa Claus is already in the National Archives when he does, which results in Clause losing his memories. Now the elf's must help Clause regain his memories by visiting historical events using the books in the archive. They meeting Saint Nicholas (the predecessor of Santa Claus), La Befana (who comes bearing gifts in Italy) and the American Santa Claus.
