Veronika and Boris come together in Moscow shortly before World War II. Walking along the river, they watch cranes fly overhead, and promise to rendezvous before Boris leaves to fight. Boris misses the meeting and is off to the front lines, while Veronika waits patiently, sending letters faithfully. After her house is bombed, Veronika moves in with Boris' family, into the company of a cousin with his own intentions.

The fishery supervision employee is killed. During the investigation the public law enforcement official has looked out on the trace of the illegal grouping which has serious reasons for the commission of more considerable crimes than the illegal animals killings.

The film tells about the brutal class struggle during the civil war in the villages of southern Ukraine.

An unprecedented piece of news spreads through the village: a comrades’ court is to be held between collective farm brigade leader Yakiv Brus and an old woman named Motria, whom he struck on the head. The village club fills with people eager to sort out what seems to be every pressing issue at once.

David Motuzka, demobilized Red Army soldier, returns to his native village, hoping to see the changes caused by the revolutionary events. But he cannot see no improvement. The village is ruled by the kulaks and David's childhood friend Kornii Matiukha helps them.

Unlike those who fulfil their duties according to the commands of the party leadership, milkmaid Praskovya Likholetova belongs to those people who do not pass by mismanagement and injustice. She has always been a truth-seeker, principled, honest, convinced of her rightness, and this has often led to conflicts. Having worked almost 40 years on the farm, Praskovya was forced to retire. But before leaving, she said that now she has a lot of time, and she will take care of their affairs...

The film traces the path of the hero (formerly an ensign and a Knight of St. George, and then a talented commander of the Red Army) from the Civil War to the Great Patriotic War.

Film tells the story of one of the most difficult and tragic moments of the liberation war of Ukrainian people against the rule of Poland (1648 - 1657 years) - Battle of Zbarazh.
