The Last Race

In 1913, Czech skiing champion Bohumil Hanč perseveres alone in a fierce snowstorm during a race, collapses from exhaustion and exposure, and is found by his friend Emerich Rath, who risks his own life in a desperate rescue attempt. Tragically, Hanč succumbs to the elements, and shortly after his friend Václav Vrbata, who lent Hanč his coat, also perishes in the blizzard.

In a secluded estate in the heart of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, a young couple battles the crushing weight of grief after losing two children. The wife is pregnant again, and their isolation only deepens the husband’s growing sense of dread and hopelessness. Haunted by the fear of another tragedy, he wrestles with his darkest instincts as the line between love and madness blurs. But when an unexpected decision pulls him back from the edge, the arrival of their child brings consequences far more disturbing than he could have ever imagined.

We had a unique moment. Czech Republic without tourists, mountains without skiers, empty streets, shops, all of this suddenly seemed almost magical. A different view of reality opened up to us. Free from descriptiveness, focused on the essential things that make life worth living. The main heroes of the film are frozen time, David Chmelař, a tugboat driver, Vanda Hybnerová, an actress, Tomáš Halík, a priest and philosopher, Havel Parkán, a café owner, and Radůza, a singer. They all agreed at the beginning that this is a time that is an opportunity to make a difference.
