Actors to have appeared in the series include John Gielgud, Leo McKern, Virginia McKenna, Paul Scofield, and Roy Kinnear. The series began on 9 September 1975 and ran for two seasons.

Set on the Orient Express train, which traveled from Ostend, Belgium, to Istanbul, Turkey, it features several characters whose destinies intertwine, each bearing their own burden of torment: race, sexual frustration, political failure, poverty.
