1905. A couple of cheerful traveling salesmen, Hansen and Larsen, are on their last round of visits to customers before settling down in the big city to open their own business selling women's underwear. They hold a farewell dinner for one of their old customers in Lilleby. There is a ball at the hotel, and a couple of young ladies make the acquaintance of the two friends, which will have consequences in more ways than one.

Erik Menkel is released after six years, convicted of the murder of Viktor Smith. He is sought out by an old college friend of Smith's, who wants Menkel to finish Smith's work. At the same time, Menkel knew a young woman who is looking for him. Jerle lets Erik Menkel disappear so that no one knows Menkel is still alive. Barbara discovers that Menkel is living with Jerle and seeks him out. Jerle has a terrible secret.

Due to his gambling addiction, farmer Hans Sværke has brought his farm to the brink of bankruptcy, thereby opening up the opportunity for the wealthy landowner Karius to achieve his goal of taking over the farm. In Fjordby, preparations are underway for a big celebration—the town's 500th anniversary, with music and dancing. The festive Mrs. Ingeborg, who earns her living playing the organ in church and at dances when the young people want to party, is constantly short of money. That is why she has a little side business: she teaches piano. Mrs. Ingeborg has a close family relationship with her lodger, the young veterinarian Kåre. He has repeatedly helped her financially. Mrs. Ingeborg needs money for a new dress for her foster daughter Nelly to wear to the party. Aunt Jessie lives on the first floor. She was once in a relationship with Mrs. Ingeborg's brother, but he broke up with her and married someone else. However, Mrs. Ingeborg still considers her a sister-in-law. She is well off financially, so she has to help out when Mrs. Ingeborg needs money for the dress.

Outside the large hotel, there is a lot of activity. It is teeming with foreigners, buses arrive and depart, and indoors the air is filled with foreign languages. But if you look more closely, you will discover that the doorman, hotel porter, waitresses, and waiters are not "real" hotel staff at all, but just students who take on extra jobs in the summer to earn money for their studies and who live in the "hotel" themselves in the winter, which is actually a student dormitory called "Egmont."

Four friends go on motorcycles to Stockholm to sort out the peas...

The small local train trundles laboriously into Torslev station. The stationmaster is standing on the platform wearing slippers, waiting for the train. When it stops, it turns out that there is only one passenger on board. A younger, strange-looking, elegantly dressed man steps onto the platform with a couple of suitcases with lots of nice brands from foreign countries. The man's name is Nelson. Many years ago he went abroad. Now he is returning home to see how things are in his hometown.

Young Jonas Tofte is a waiter in the theater café, but he is more than that; he is also a poet and has written a comedy that is about to premiere. With this, both he and his sweet little wife, Else, hope to be out of all the difficulties they have come to know so well.
