With BONANZA (FID 2002), his first film, Ulisses Rosell took us on a journey to meet a tribe of extremely colorful Argentinian poachers. This new dive into exotica takes us to the Wichi Indians in Chaco, Argentina, who have not long been sedentary, with an American ethnologist as our guide. To some degree a repentant ethnologist, John Palmer, rather than finishing his thesis, married a native and had a large family. Rather than observing it from a distance, he chose to become part of this discreet and beleaguered community. He strives to support their cause, getting involved in law suits and confronting companies which pillage land that belongs to the Indians with complete impunity.

18-year-old Nacho shows up at the cow-breeding ranch of his father, Marcos, whom he barely knows. His father is worried because, as the ranch’s yearly auction is approaching, several cows are dying without explanation. When Nacho finds out who is killing the cows and why, he understands the magnitude of the problem. Cornered by distress and confusion, he’ll have to choose: being a boss or not being a boss. Perpetuating the system, the insult, the abuse, or refusing to take part in it.

In an inhospitable rural area in North-East Argentina, machismo, destitution and the repression meted out under the military dictatorship sees the birth of the latest daughter born to Antonio, alcoholic woodcutter who anxiously wanted his first son. After the three daughters are farmed out to families in better financial position, he christens the latest one with the name of José, nicknamed Bumbún, and forces her to take on the identity of a boy. Mercedes, hurt by having lost her other daughters, protects the girl and keeps up the lie, constantly threatened by Antonio. Having been forced to act as a boy since childbirth, Bumbún will struggle between whether to accept her fate or to fight to change it.

Two buddies' road trip is halted by car trouble in the middle of nowhere; they stumble on a derelict hotel and are inspired to try to restore it, with the help of an odd bunch of locals.

Pantanal is a South American road film, situated somewhere between fiction and documentary, that takes place between Buenos Aires and the Pantanal in Brazil’s Mato Grosso. A man flees Buenos Aires with a bag full of money and with every intention to repay the debt he owes his brother, with whom he has lost touch with years prior. The journey towards the Pantanal becomes complex as the man runs into various complications and begins to believe that someone may be following him. As visually stunning as it is intellectually stimulating Pantanal employs documentary testimonies of the people who encountered the man throughout his journey, adopting real life into the fictional narrative. Working within a hybrid between fiction and documentary keeps the film both captivating and engaging throughout the film’s entire journey, in addition to adding emotional credibility to this road movie.
